Burgate House Fishery River Avon
Burgate is a compact but varied and picturesque reach of the middle Avon, just upstream of Fordingbridge – it’s the ideal place for anglers to come and enjoy the solitude of the valley, in an idyllic, pastoral setting. The variety is by virtue of the upper half of the fishery being a good-sized secondary channel, or carrier, which really comes into its own when the main channel is running high and fish seek refuge, while the lower half is the main Avon, featuring a deep, dark pool on a bend as well as fast, broad, gravelly runs and everything in between. This makes it a classic “mixed fishery” with ideal coarse trotting and legering swims within a stone’s throw of shallow, wild trout-holding riffles with great wading opportunities. Stunning chub, barbel, dace, roach and perch have been caught in recent seasons and this is a very reliable and productive winter pike fishery, with opportunities for both static and roving approaches.
The fishery includes a slighter shorter section of the true-left hand (eastern) bank, which is a hidden gem, providing close access to the far side of the pool on the bend as well as some rarely-fished swims farther downstream, opposite the stately Burgate Manor, HQ of the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust.
