The following dates have been approved by the Environment Agency and Wiltshire Fishery Association for weed cutting in the 2020 season.

Weed growth at the start of the year will be closely monitored and cut early in the allocated period if required .

  • Free weed cutting period – Wed 15th & Tuesday 28th April
    This period allows for a maximum 3-days light cutting (by hand only) which includes clearing down. Anyone cutting must inform their downstream neighbour before cutting commences and after clearing down. Representatives from EA, NE and WFA will continue to monitor weed cutting.
    EA weed booms will not be deployed.
    Areas where there are salmon and trout redds and a potential for juvenile fry emergence, especially after a cold winter/early spring, should be left uncut.

The following dates have been approved by the EA and Wiltshire Fishery Association for weed cutting in the 2019 season.

2018 was almost a return to the heavey weed growth we used to experience back a few years ago although in some areas growth was still limited.
The Keeper team did a magnificent job and only had to use mechanical assistance in a few of the deeper stretches.

Weed growth at the start of the year will be closely monitored and cut early in the allocated period if required .

River Test Weed cutting dates 2018 .

The chalkstreams of Southern England are renowned for the crystal clear water high in nutrients which not only  grows large trout but also helps to produce exceptional weed growth.
This has to be managed to not only allow fishing access but control water height but to help prevent flooding of surrounding farmland, villages and towns.

Ever year there are periods during the trout season when the river keepers are allowed to cut this weed, once cut the weed floats downstream to collection points where it is taken out of the river.
Rather than cut all the weed, keepers are very selective in cutting as is home to many invertebrates that fish and birds rely upon in the river valleys.

The dates for weed cutting in 2018 have now been confirmed by the River Test & Itchen Association.
