Salisbury & District Angling Club Spring 2017 Newsletter

Hard copy production has always been time consuming and costly to the Club and now with only a very small number of members receiving the news in this format the time has come to phase out the Newsletter in this medium.

This Spring 2017 edition will be one of the very last hard copy newsletters produced, all relevant information is now easily transmitted via the forum or the news pages on the web site and is almost instantaneous.

As of December 2017 this method of Club communication will cease.
We recognise that some members may not personally own or have access to a computer. If this is the case please inform the office.

EA rod Licence Changes from April 2017

Amongst the changes are a free rod licence for junior anglers between  12 and 16 years old,  a rolling rod licence that lasts for 365 days from the day you buy it and a new three-rod licence option.

While fishing for juniors aged 12 to 16 becomes free they will still have to register to receive a licence to fish and not having one will still be an offence.

The announcement follows consultation with anglers on the proposals that were announced back in May 2016.

PLEASE NOTE, CLUB FISHERY RULE 2 STILL APPLIES REGARDING THE NUMBER OF RODS THAT CAN BE USED ON OUR WATERS.

Spring 2017 Game summary.

A relatively mild winter has enabled a lot of work on the fisheries and promises a good start with no areas out of bounds or flooded as I write. Members should try to avoid walking on newly seeded areas of which there are quite a number particularly at West Amesbury.

There are new fisheries to explore on the Wylye at Eastleigh, an extension to the Norton Bavant beat and an extension to the Abbey up through the garden where members are welcome to walk around the grounds. Manningford on the Upper Avon has been extended up stream. A lot of work has been done at a number of fisheries reducing trees, improving banks and adding structures in stream. Some paths in to the reeds at West Amesbury will enable some of those difficult areas to be fished. Fences, gates, stiles as usual upgraded. The path down through the wood below Sleeper Bridge upgraded. The bridge at Norton Bavant rebuilt and so on, too much to list you will just have to go and look at it all.

As a result of these changes you will need to check your book at your fishery of choice, make sure you are clear on the conditions for that site. An important restriction is in place at Norton Bavant, to allow the new channel to naturalise do not fish between the white posts. Please look closely at the days we are permitted to fish these upper Wylye waters.

We have concluded an agreement with the new owners at Stapleford and we will continue to fish there. We will be improving the river with a view to reducing and eventually stopping stocking at that site as part of the “Wild Wylye” project.

A new mixed fishery at Folds Farm on the Middle Avon will be well worth exploring with the fly, lure or spinner, we expect to see big trout and some salmon and sea trout there.

This season stocked fish will be marked with a different system, we will use “Floy tags” next to the dorsal fin. You will see a little coloured plastic tag sticking up. These should be more visible compared to the dye marking method we used in the past. These are the fish to take if you want one for the pot. This system will be cheaper and will allow us to use different colour tags for different seasons. We can then start to learn something about stocked fish survival rates.

The rivers are at good early season levels but we have not had the winter rain to fully replenish the aquifers. The boreholes are all well below normal and this might mean that we are faced with low levels in the summer months.

We are keeping an eye on developments with the A303 tunnel and the developments associated with the expansion of the army on Salisbury Plain. Both have the capacity to impact on the rivers but the A303 in particular is at a very early stage. There will be a pipeline bored under our Stonehenge beat sometime this year, but we will try to keep fishery disruption to a minimum. This is part of the sewage network extension for the new properties built for army personnel to be relocated in Larkhill.

Don’t forget the club’s open day where lots of tuition, advice, fishing, good conversation and food will be available. Sunday 14th May at the Manningford fishery. Details will be published soon on the Forum and Web Site.

New Water for 2017/2018 season

Folds Farm Mixed Fishery

The Club is pleased to announce that it has secured the Folds Farm fishery on the middle Avon for the season commencing April 1st 2017. This fishery is approx. 2 miles of single bank mixed fishing. Over the years there have been good catches of fish reported including Chub, Barbel, Trout and Salmon. The fishing will be open only to our members to fish for the full year from April 1st 2017 until March 31st 2018.

Car parking will be available both at Folds Farm and also at Burgate Manor Farm giving good access over the suspension bridge on the opposite bank to our fishing. The gate at Folds Farm will have a club lock fitted alongside the farm lock. This gate must be locked behind you. Fishing is dawn to dusk and members may take a non fishing guest with them.

This water has a good mix of wide, slow and deeper sections as well as faster, shallower water for our members to fish. New stiles have been built to assist our members in accessing the banks where these are fenced.

The fishery will be closed to our members on shooting days from September through January and the dates for this will be published on the forum and at the fishery once these are available.

We have taken this fishery initially on a 1 year trial period and we would encourage all of our members to fish this water and to report their catches as if this water proves popular and successful we would wish to take this fishery on a longer term agreement.
